Claude Levi Strauss was a structuralist philosopher, which pursued his interest in how much our world is described in turns of binary opposites. Binary is a term related to computing reference to 0s and 1s, which in mathematic terms are polar opposites. He soon realised that his theory did not specifically reflect just texts and stories, but could be applied to almost any medium of media. From films to adverts binary opposition was utilised to produce massive contrast, whether it be evil vs good or a before and after for a washing advert.

To date, productions of both film and text, often adhere to his theorem of binary opposition and can easily be identified in any aspect of a film, intentional or not. One example that reflects this is Star Wars. Star Wars, the huge franchise built by George Lucas, often uses binary opposition to define the characters between good and evil. Luke Skywalker, often dressed in his white gowns, portrays the act of good unlike Darth Vader; dressed in a black suite reflecting the connotations of evil and the consumer of light [good].
